"Rumah Singgah"

Street children become one of the phenomena that we should focus on. They live and spend their time mostly in the street and the worrying thing is that the number of criminalist may raise.

o deal with this problem, one way that can be done by building “Rumah Singgah”, the place where the street children can spend their time by doing many activities which give benefits to them, such as reading, writing, lesson as in line with elementary, junior high, senior high schools. In “Rumah Singgah” they are sheltered and taught about living in the future.

Usually, “Rumah Singgah” has some functions; as a shelter in order to give protection to the children from abusing of their surrounding, as a rehabilitation centre in where the street children can get their acceptance in the society and as a school (non-formal) in where the street children can get non-formal education and skills. It also functions to resocialize the personality and behaviour of the street children which is supposed to be in line with the norm of the society.

As the observation has been done to one in Jakarta, the street children are gathered there. They get some beneficial lessons, such as; learning English, computer, making handicraft and many more. One child that was interviewed said that he came to the “Rumah Singgah” because of his friend. He went to school and finished in the grade 5 of elementary school. There are also some street children who don’t want to stay in “Rumah Singgah” due to the strict rules they have.
