Consumption of cigarettes has increased worldwide between 1970-1972 and remained
relatively constant between 1990-1992. In economic developed countries , the trend
of continuous growing , has met a short period of stagnation in the ‘80s , but in
developing countries, although smoking has been expanded to national scale much later,
it started and evolved explosively. Probably the most spectacular evolution was recorded
in Asia-Pacific, where consumption of cigarettes doubled between 1970-1990, (except
for Singapore and New Zealand because of the prohibition of smoking). Also, existing
data worldwide show that the habit of smoking continues to represent one of the most
popular vices among both men and women.
