Ty’Sheoma
Bethea is a fourteen year old girl who lives in South Carolina who
wrote a
letter to President Barack Obama, about the deteriorating conditions in
her school.
Ty’Sheoma goes to the J.V Martin Junior High School in Dillon, South
Carolina.
Ty’Sheoma’s principal thought that letter was important information.
The
principal actually sent the letter electronically to President Obama.
After
Obama received the letter, he thought it was very important information
too. He
mentioned it in his initial speech to Congress. Ty’Sheoma was invited
to this
joint session of Congress and was able to sit next to First Lady,
Michelle
Obama. Ty’Sheoma Bethea has made
an impact on society by highlighting the need for all
children to have excellent schools. She has also proved that young
people can
make a big difference. By supporting her school, Ty’Sheoma
provided a
voice for many children in our country. However Ms. Bethea doesn’t want
anyone
to view her classmates as untrained or lacking the skills to succeed.
In fact,
Ty’Sheoma Bethea stated, "People are starting to see my school as a
hopeless, uneducated school which we are not." As a result of all her
hard
work, Ty’Sheoma Bethea has been honored with the Super Kid Award by the
James
Stephens Scholarship Foundation.
