Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines and on their Destruction

Signatories

The Convention has been signed by 133 countries, and in addition a further 23 countries recognise and abide by the Convention

Dates

The Convention was first signed on 3 December 1997 and came into force on 1 March 1999

Key Points of the Treaty

Every member state will not use, produce, stockpile or transport anti-personnel mines (landmines designed for human bodily harm). This however, is excused if the mines are to be used for training in clearing mine fields and mine detection. If a member state does have a stockpile of mines then they are expected to destroy them within 9 years of signing the Convention.

Members of the Convention will meet regularly to discuss any new issues related to the Convention, including new technologies to help detect landmines.
