Soccer in Australia

Soccer is a sport known all over the world-even in the far reaches of Australia. In 1922, the first national team was formed and toured New Zealand. The tour resulted in two losses and a draw. Over the next 25 years, Australia remained friends with New Zealand while gaining new friends: China and South Africa. Australia’s team would then play friendly matches with the other countries’ teams. For the next 80 years, the Australian team found it hard to play against other countries due to the geographical location of the country (Australia national football (soccer) team).
In Australia, government statistics showed that soccer is one of the most popular sports in Australia based on crowd attendance. It is also the sport in Australia that is most participated and is still growing. The Socceroos, Australia’s soccer team, plays soccer internationally. While the FFA (Football Federation Australia) was part of the Oceania Football Confederation, it is now a member of the Asian Football Confederation. This change was initiated as of January 1, 2006 (Sport in Australia).
