Well, metals helped the human civilization to scale great heights. From simple tools to space satellites, metals provide the very foundation for strength, stability and reliability.
However, all is not rosy about metals. There are dark sides too. From extraction to usage and disposal, various processes involving metals have significant impact on safety, health and the environment. It is important that we keep these negative, or the "dark sides" of metals in mind as well, so that we can protect ourselves from the necessary evils that comes with them. The good news is that most of these adverse effects of metals can be controlled, or at least, minimized, with proper training and adherence to good practices.
