Benito Mussolini’s Death

On April 25th, 1945, Mussolini’s puppet government in Northern Italy dissolved. Italian partisans and American forces ended German control of region. As the ranks of Italian partisans swelled and Allied armies advanced north, Mussolini fled toward Switzerland and hid in the retreating German army convoy. In disguise, he tried to escape from the Allied advance. Just before Allied armies reached Milan, he was caught by Italian partisan.

He and his mistress Clara Petacci were captured in Italian Village of Dongo Bongo while trying to flee Switzerland. Waiter Audisio, once pardoned by Mussolini for a jail term in 1934, took custody. Mussolini knew he would be killed; therefore, he opened his shirt and asked to be shot. Audisio attempted to shoot with an Italian submarine gun, but it did not fire. Then he took an Italian Pistol, but it did not fire either. Desperate, Audisio grabbed French Weapon MAS 7.65 and killed both Mussolini and Petacci on April 28th, 1945, at Giulini Di Mezzegra near Lake Como.

Their bodies were brought to the Piazzale Loreto in Milan on April 29th, 1945. They were hung by the feet while a crowd of Italian spit on and beat the remains.
