Timeline
1791-The French invented the Celerifere which has two wheels, and one is larger than the other.
1817-Baron von Drais invented an improved Celerifere which was called a “hobby horse” and was steered with handles.
1868-In America, something called a Velocipede was invented which looked sort of like a normal bike today except it wasmade out of wood.
1872-After America replaced metal tires with rubber tires then Britain made the Ariel.
1876-In America the High Wheeler was shown to the public.
1884-J.K. Starly invented the Safety Bicycle, and Thomas Stevens rode a bicycle across the United States.
1889-Rubber tires were invented for the bottom of the bicycle.
1895-Chicago's mailmen were put onto bicycles instead of horses, and a good quality horse was very inexpensive.
1896-Coaster brakes were invented, and Henry Ford built the first working car.
1960-Bicycles were more popular than ever.
1972-Bicycles outsell cars, 13 million to 11 million!
1975-Human Powered Speed Championships took place for the first time internationally.
1976-2,000 cyclists celebrated the bicycle by riding across America.
