FORCES THAT TOOK A PART IN THE WAR
Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC)- their forces include the national army under President Laurent-Desire Kabila, named Shaba during Zairian period, anti-foreigner Mai Mai groups, Zimbabwe, Angola, Chad, Sudan and Namibia that supported the Kabila regime.Their goal: to create their own territory with strong borders.
HUTU- their forces include Rwandan Hutus who took part in the Rwandan genocide, Burundian rebels, the Congolese Hutus, and the forces Democratiques de la liberation du Rwanda.Their goal: to execute the ethnic cleansing of the Banymulenge and to exploit the natural resources of the DRC.
RWANDA-their forces include the national army of the Tutsi- dominated governments under the President Paul Kagame, Banymulenge – dominated Rally for the Congolese Democracy (RCD), and the ethnic Tutsi Banymulenge who made the militia groups.Their goal: to protect national security of Rwanda and Burundi, to defend the Tutsis in the DRC, and to exploit natural resources.
UGANDA – their forces include the national army under the President Yoweni Musaveni, and Uganda’s rebel groups (Movement for the liberation of the Congo). Uganda was accused by the UN for illegal exploitation of natural resources from the DRC.Their goal: to protect their own borders from invasion by DRC-armed groups.
