Welcome to Chinese Myths

China's history is closely woven into their legends, and featured in many of their myths.

One of China's myths; it could also be concidered a legend; is the Oni. It is common for parents to often tell their children is that if they were bad little boys and girls, an Oni would come during the night and punish them and there is nothing their parents could do to help them.

An Oni is a demon that comes out at night and terriozes people. It is said that they mostly target young children on the pretence that the kids brought it upon themselves by behaving badly. Some people believe that Oni's are real, others do not.

Dragons are beautiful, "mythical'" creatures. The Eastern dragons are vastly different to the Western dragons. They are loved and worshiped; temples, shrines and pagodas have been built to honor and worship them. They are said to be very graceful, and when they fly, it looks like a moving piece of artwork.

Western dragons are portayed as vicious, malicious beings that are to be hated, not to be loved or worshiped. They are used for entertainment purposes, such as movies and books. Hardly anyone believes that they exist; and if they do, they fear them.

Interview with Catie:

"Legend of the Oni is obviously a myth; as you can tell by logic. But, people went along with it for many years and people to this day tell the story as if it were real.

"There is something about finding a dragon, slaying it, eating it and living forever. I personally don't believe in it because, dragons aren't real. I don't believe in them."
