China's legends are past down from generation to generation, usually within family, friends and realitives. Often told during a family gathering.
Chinese legends are told to teach people a lesson. As in, advise them on what not to do and to change their ways to make them a better person. Most legends feature a human, doing wrong and meeting with a God who advises on how to be a better person. Others show Gods and Goddesses, their rivalry and how it affected the humans; shaped their world.
One legend is; a fairly rich man wanted some new shoes, he spent all day measuring the size of his feet, and making sure everything perfict. Soon, it was getting late and the man had to run to meet the shoe maker before his shop closed. Unfortunatly, the man forgot the measurments at his home in his haste to meet the shoe maker. The shoe maker says it is ok, he will wait for the man to run home and get the measurments and bring them back and he will make the shoes. The man runs home and brings the measurments only to find the shoe maker had closed his shop. An bi-stander asks the man what is wrong for he looks fustrated. The man tells him his story. The on-looker asks the man, did you want to buy the shoes for yourself, or for someone else. The man replys, for myself of course. The on-looker then says, then you can make the shoes yourself.
Interview with Catie-
"In ancient chinese religion, there are several main Gods each representing a different property. The main one- a goddess represents purity, and the goddess of life. The god represents knowledge, fortune and wealth makes
The supreme god is actually a woman.
Incense are a big part of worshiping gods-you place them in odd order in either 1,3,5,7,9. In even orders it's unlucky.
"There is a legend that goes like this:
"The ancient ruler Shi Huangdi wanted to look for a pill of immortality ...legend is he sent out 100 men to go around the world to find him the pills. Whoever found them would not be killed ...obviously no one found them so they all stayed in those's places they went to-which caused the diversity in races- and Shi Huangdi died soon after.
"Legends is my weakest link...so many I've forgotten ...there's also one about how the Jade Goddess and the Fire God are rivals, but they still try to do the same thing for people. As in help them.
"And the Fertility God is just there to be around...Make more babies. That's why China has so many people..."
"There's so many more, there's some stuff that's not PG 13...I'll reference it. There's certain things you can not do during certain times according to the Moon Position or else it will cause bad luck in fertility and bad health in men." |
