A Conclusion
In everything the middle course is best: all things in excess bring trouble to men.
--Titus Maccius Plautus, Ancient Rome's best known playwright
Plautus says it best, the message which Portable Partners hopes to invoke thought for and bring across - nothing is ever good in excess, and we should always pursue for moderation.
I, for one, do not deny that I am in possession of three of the four portable devices, having misplaced my iPod in an overseas trip last year. I enjoy their company and cannot imagine how inconvenient life would be without them.
Certainly, they have brought certain colour and flexibility to our lifestyles. However, as the saying goes "Everything Comes With A Price" and we should always be mindful of our actions, lest they transpire into addictions. Additionally, it is essential we take certain precautionary methods to prevent them from causing harm to both our body, and the Earth's body.
Everyday, in school and when commuting, I see many peers and youths alike to me utilising mobile devices as such. Even for myself, there are times when I feel I may be too reliant on such devices to keep me company. At times, they even make it effortless for us to avoid conversation or interaction with one another, for fear of awkwardness and a lack of topic, that we just elude it all together.
The positive effects of mobile devices are abundance and unquestionably not surpassed by its negative aspects. On theory, this is true. Conversely, in reality, how beneficial or detrimental they are depend on your actions - do you have control over them? Or do they have control over you?
Take media players as an example, say we give in to its evils and damage our hearing, how can it still be therapeutic for us when we can no longer hear? For handheld gaming consoles, how can they aid us in teamwork and social skills when all we do is immerse in its virtual realms and reject getting out and in touch with civilization completely?
Of course, what has been written is non-exhaustive and only serves as an overview of the harm and benefits which these devices may carry. On balance, parts of it may not be definite(nothing ever is), as further experiments and surveys are still being carried out at this point of time, but nonetheless definitely not a topic to be neglected. The fact that so much attention and resources are allocated into its research and development proves my point.
