About Me
My name's Alex and I'm a 16 years old student from Dunman High School in Singapore. Designing the website is my main job, as my interest and talent lies in art. I also help with the miscellaneous content such as bibliography and quizzes. In this digitally-dependent society, all of us are subjected to the omnipresent influence of Internet. Internet provides us with rich information, a platform for communication and endless entertainment. This is a trend that will be continued for years. To avoid getting left out in the digital 'rush', we students have to constantly keep up with new ideas and adapt ourselves to the ever-growing changes in this fast paced world. In the process of making a website, we will be equipped with essential skills such as teamwork, communication and in-depth knowledge of website mechanics. This is beneficial and enriching to us as the skills will be carried over beyond our student life and into our career.
My ThinkQuest Experience
As part of my job as the website designer, I have to work closely with the programmer. Specifically, my job is to make banners, favicons, splash pages and wallpapers. As I have prior knowledge of website design before, it was not hard for me to finish my tasks. But one main obstacle our team and I faced was time constraints. Due to my hectic schoolwork and activities, I delayed my tasks a lot. This worried the group leader, Agnes and through the many reminders she sent me, it was futile as I was up to my ears in work. Until one day, my coach sent me a mail with a quote "Typically good students are the ones who juggle many hats, I believe you can rise to the challenge if you want to." This quote inspired me, and prompting me to gather myself up and finish the design in one concentrated effort.
I learnt that website designing and programming is not a walk in the park, it requires close communication with the designer and programmer. I have to ponder about how the colour clashes, whether the design will confuse the viewers and its aesthetic values. I also learnt that content is more important than design, as the site is meant to be educational and not a 'white elephant' with no value. Teamwork and communication is also crucial for the completion of this project, everyone in the team is an essential piece of jigsaw puzzle, when connected correctly, will give rise to a perfect picture that we all envisioned.
