Portable Partners .::. Featuring Abdullah

About Me

Salutations everyone! The world knows me by the name Abdullah. I was born in Karachi, Pakistan. I am a tenth grader at Generation's School, Karachi . I am a short, skinny and bespectacled teenager in the fifteenth year of my life. I am a responsible, energetic and diligent worker devoting most of my time to studies.

Playing and watching football is one of my amateur interests. My favourite footballers are Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. Other than football, I like playing table tennis. Reading books is another of my hobbies, my favourite author being Agatha Christie. All kinds of encyclopedias and informative books interest me too. As far as my eating habits are concerned, I am afraid that this piece of writing does not have the scope to hold the lengthy list of my favourite cuisines.

My aim in life is to pass my O and A-level examinations with flying colours and my ultimate dream is to become a successful chartered accountant.

My ThinkQuest Experience

ThinkQuest was a wonderful experience for me. I joined it since I wanted to take part in some activity other than the usual co-curricular activities at school (elocution, debate, panel discussion, etc.). Also when I saw that creating a website on Thinkquest was not so hard, I thought 'why not give it a try?'

Consequently I joined the group, and our task kicked off. Honestly speaking, I felt really proud of joining an international project led by high-calibre teachers and an able student. I found the other group members (Alex from Singapore , Munazza and Rida from Generation's School Pakistan) to be hardworking students as well, who have contributed to the best of their abilities.

My reason for choosing this topic 'Portable Partners' is that these days we have become very careless in using these gadgets. We are taking them for granted and do not stop to think about the harm they are doing to our bodies and minds. I wanted to raise awareness about their harmful affects and what could have been a better way than creating a website! I hope our website becomes an effective source in spreading awareness through out the world population regarding the negative effects of gadgets.

Even though my task was to research on substantial information on cell phones for the website, it was a tedious job nonetheless. Reading long detailed matter, synthesizing all the required material and writing in my own words was tough. With the looming terror of my O-levels, it became harder to find time for the project. However with my coach, Ms. Aniqa Masroor, backing me all the time I managed to complete my work successfully and well on time. Frequent electricity failures also posed a challenge for. On some occasions, I used to be in the middle of my task when the lights went out (and then my frustration knew no bounds!) For this I had to sacrifice my studies and resume work when electricity was restored. I am certain that Munazza and Rida, who belong to my context, which is a developing one, were also affected by the power problem.

In this project firstly I learned a great deal about the hazards of the common gadgets we use such as cell phones, laptops, music players and handheld gaming consoles. Secondly I understood the advantages of online learning. I realized that I no longer had to sit at one place at a particular time to do my work. I could do it from home also at any time which suited me! The benefits of online learning are greater than researching alone (on websites), because these kind of forums provide an opportunity of interacting with others and learning from them. The third benefit was I found my writing skill has improved quite a bit!

I am grateful that our project has successfully ended.
