Why did our team decide to write about women in the Olympics? These athletic women inspire us! They have excellent athletic ability, skills, and a tremendous amount of talent. Every two years, the Olympics (alternating from summer to winter) brings not only these women but also other competitors and spectators from countries around the world together for exciting athletic challenges. Many of these women have overcome obstacles and trained for years in order to compete in the Olympics.
The Summer Olympics started as early as 776 B.C. in Greece without women as competitors. Women were not allowed to compete until 1900, when the Olympic Games were held in Paris, France.  The first Winter Olympics were held in 1924 in Chamonix, France, with women only participating in figure skating.
We have chosen some of the major events in which women athletes compete today, including: soccer, equestrian, gymnastics, swimming, weightlifting, track, basketball, volleyball, snowboarding, ice hockey, curling, luge, figure skating, and skiing. There are many other events, but these were the ones that captured our imaginations.
This website was made for educational purposes. We hope you enjoy learning about these outstanding women athletes as much as we enjoyed writing about them.
