She won her first World Championship in 2005, lifting 300 kilograms in the Women's +75 Kg weight class. In the 2008 Beijing Olympics, she had such a huge lead that second place Olha Korobka of Ukraine did not lift her last lift, knowing she could only achieve as high as silver. After Jang Mi-ran lifted, she said, "I would not necessarily say I'm the strongest woman in the world. But certainly winning three world championships and winning this gold medal in the Olympics is a very great honor."
Jang Mi-ran began weightlifting at age seventeen, following in her father and young sister's footsteps. Although having lifted the heaviest lift at the Athens Games, she finished second to Tang Gonghong winning silver.
