Weightlifting History

Although weightlifting did not appear in the Olympics in 1900, it was included in the 1904 Olympics. It was removed officially in 1908. It was once again added officially in 1920, and has not been removed since. Women's weightlifting was first introduced in the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia. In the current Olympics, there are fifteen sets of medals awarded, eight men's and seven women's.

Weightlifting originated in Egypt and Greece and was introduced to the Summer Olympics in 1896 but was removed, although International Competitions have been available since 1891.

Did You Know?
The first weightlifting competition was held in London in 1901. The first women's competition was held in 1987.
