Famous Volleyball Athletes

Misty May Treanor, a professional beach volleyball player for the United States, received the Athlete of the Year award in 1998, and she participated on the All American First Team for three years. In 2003, Treanor and her teammate, Kerri Walsh, were named the Association of Volleyball Professionals Team of the Year after having an undefeated season of 39-0 and winning eight tournaments.

In the 2004 Summer Olympics, Treanor won gold after she and her teammate defeated the Brazilian team in the finals. During the off-season, Treanor coaches women’s volleyball at Irvine Valley Junior College as an assistant coach.

Hélia Rogério de Souza, nicknamed Fofão, is a Brazilian indoor volleyball player who competed for her country's national team in five consecutive Summer Olympics. She won a gold medal in 2008 and won a bronze medal twice, in 1996 and 2000. She also won a gold medal at the 1999 Pan American Games. Fofão retired from the Brazilian National Team on September 7, 2008, after helping her country beat the Dominican Republic and winning the Final Four competition. She has played a total of 340 games for the national team.
