There are many regulations for figure skating because there are several different types of skating competitions. The following rules refer to the Singles Free Skate; for any other information refer to the 2008 Official Figure Skating Rulebook ©.

The skaters are judged on the following components: overall skating quality, transitions (intricate footwork, positions and movement), performance (involvement of the skater), choreography (original arrangement of all types), interpretation (personal, and creative translation). Points are deducted for falls, trips, and other errors. Even the minute ones.
