Muntenia’s unique mix of historical and natural attractions promises a different experience each day for its travelers. In Muntenia you can visit the beautiful Peles Castle in Sinaia, considered one of the best-preserved royal castles in Europe, the Prahova Valley and the popular ski resorts of Predeal, Busteni and Sinaia,the The Unirea salt mine in Slanic Prahova, where 2.9 million tons of salt have been extracted since 1685. Due to the therapeutic microclimate, former mine shafts are used as asthma treatment facilities. Visitors can also enjoy a walk around the mine and the salt-carved sculptures.
In Bucharest you can visit The Village Museum in Bucharest with its complete traditional houses, workshops, and churches that have been brought here from around the country, The National Art Museum in Bucharest ,with works by Romanian and international artists such as Constantin Brancusi, Nicolae Grigorescu, Stefan Luchian, Rembrandt, Rubens, El Greco, Messina, Titian, Tintoretto, Velasquez, and others,The National Theate, The Palace of the Parliament and many other places. The Palace of the Parliament is the world's largest civilian administrative building.
Traditional food from Muntenia:
Mititei one of the most popular gastronomic specialties in Romania , were created by accident in the kitchen of Gambrinus restaurant a culinary hotspot in Bucharest. One night, when there were no more of the famous sausages known as patricieni, as the cook had runt short of bowels to stuff with the remaining minced meat, he placed the meat straight on the grill. The emerging sausages were somewhat smaller but the customers highly appreciated them.
Other traditional dishes include chicken soup with homemade noodles, meatballs soup, grilled fish in pickle sauce served with polenta(mamaliga).
Four servings of mamaliga :
You'll need:
• 1-1/2 cups cornmeal
• 2-1/8 cups water
• 1 Tbsp. salt
• Sour cream
• Your choice of cheese (Iuliana uses fresh cheese she makes from milk given by her dairy cows)
• Kitchen string
1. Boil water in a heavy pot.
2. Add salt.
3. When water boils, pour the cornmeal gradually into the pot, mixing it continually with a spoon.
4. Stir until the mamaliga thickens.
5. When mamaliga becomes difficult to stir, remove from heat.
6. Turn mamaliga out onto a working surface.
7. Cut into thin layers using string.
8. Alternate layers of mamaliga with cheese and sour cream, repeating as desired.
