THE TROUT
By Tomas
The main types of trout are rainbow, lake, brown and brook trout. Trout live in most streams, lakes, rivers ,and ponds in the state of New Hampshire, but mostly live in cold water because they are a cold water species. Most trout do not reproduce naturally in New Hampshire because of the re-claiming of most lakes and ponds in New England. So nowadays the fish that we catch are farm raised or hatchery fish.
Trout will mostly eat what ever they can catch, but they like insects, crawfish, and other fish up to a third of their size. Trout have five fins, the dorsal, the pectoral, the pelvic, and the adipose are four of them
The world record rainbow trout weighted forty three pounds and six ounces. The world record lake trout was sixty five pounds. That’s big! The biggest brook trout is fourteen pounds and eight ounces. Native trout do not have their fins clipped that is one way you can tell if you have caught a native. Native’s also having more red spots that are surrounded by blue halo. The color red is the most favorable color for lures and flies when fishing for trout. There are many techniques used to catch trout. You can fly fish, Ice fish with a jigging pole or a tip up, spin fishing, trolling or drift fishing. My favorite is spin fishing. When you spin fish you can use many different artificial lures, power bait, and live bait such as worms or shiners to try to attract the big one. Some people use bobbers but others don’t. Fly fishing can be expensive. You need a special rod and line and a variety of flies. Also most people have other equipment such as vests, clothes, waders, creels and nets. But the most important thing you could bring along with you on a fishing trip is patience. Some people have kayaks, boats or special floating tubes and funny looking fins to paddle around the lakes. I like a good rock myself; and knee high waterproof boots. The open water season starts when all the ice has gone out. Designated trout ponds and lakes have special rules and dates and times that you must go by. I do not have to purchase a fishing license until I am sixteen years old.
