Major Shogunates

         Shogun is word shortened from the word seii tai shogun, which means great barbarian conqueror and that is what the major shogunates Tokugawa, Ashikaga, and Kamakura represented.
The title shogun was given in the Nara period (710-94) to lords who achieved great success in Japan.
