Kiai

Usually known as the loud shouts in karate, kiai is percieved as an outlet of our energy, and in some ways, to distract our opponents.

Yet, the true meaning lies in the translation of the kanji. The term means “joining energy” and it is channeling one's energy, and focusing into a single body. The main purposes of kiai are to provide fighting spirit, and to coordinate breathing and muscle contraction.
