Selene (Greek)/Luna (Roman)
Ancient Greek moon goddess.

Selene was the daughter of the god Hyperion and the goddess Theia.  Selene was said to rise as night fell upon the earth.  She would ride in her horse-drawn carriage through the night sky, for she was the goddess of the moon.
Selene fell in love with a handsome shepherd named Endymion and they had fifty daughters.  She did not wish her mortal lover to die, so she put him to sleep forever.
