Nerieds
The Nerieds were 50 different sea nymphs, whose parents were the sea god, Nereus, and Doris, daughter of Oceanus. They resided in Nereus’ ocean-floor castle, but frequently surfaced to frolic in the waves and go ashore to dry their hair and amuse themselves with games. Beautiful and gentle, they also rode dolphins, and helped sailors in jeopardy.
Some of the more famous Nerieds include: Thetis, who gave birth to Achilles and tried to make him immortal in the river Styx; Amphitrite, who married Poseidon; and Galatia, who scandalously rejected the sea god Polyphemus’ love.
