Hestia (Greek)/Vesta (Roman)

Oldest sister of Zeus and Hera; she represented hospitality, personal security, and happiness.  Also the embodiment of the hearth, an important part of life during that time.

When a person left home, they would take an ember from the family hearth with them.  This signified the closeness of family even when apart.  Communities had public hearths, sometimes used in religious rituals, so the hearth is was a sacred image.

At a feast, Hestia was assaulted by Priapus.  Others at the feast were furious and banished him.  This tale is believed by most to be a warning to those who would mistreat guests under the protection of the hearth.
