Causes Towards Roman Demise The roman civilization had many causes towards its demise. Its central government, which had worked for centuries, had finally met its match by the extensive empire that was built by previous emperors. They also had to deal with the relentless attacks on them by the barbarians. Rome had very corrupt rulers in its extensive life as a super power. The emperor position has been filled with murder and lies in the entire roman past. One of such corrupt roman emperors was Nero. Nero was insane; he himself watched the city of Rome burn to the ground while he was playing his harp. The final Roman emperor was Romulus Augustulus, a child, which ironically was the name of the founder of Rome. The Roman civilian had some barbaric forms of entertainment. One of these forms was the gladiator fighting. The gladiatorial combat was a fight to the death, which formed entertainment for roman citizens. The gladiators consisted of slaves who were forced to fight to the death for entertainment of thousands of people at a time. This ultimately pulled people away from the corruption of the emperor and made the civilization less and less civilized. Rome was also under constant attack from the barbarians from the north. The Gaul’s as they were called wanted their territory back, but the Romans had colonized the Germanic land and would not allow the Gaul’s to have their land back. So the Gaul’s attacked. The Roman legions fought well but they were spread thin. They were eventually defeated. The Gaul’s attacked and they and other barbarian tribes sacked Rome. Thus without an army to defend their borders cities were ransacked by barbarians and without a strong emperor to reunite the empire they fell to their knees. Rome taught us many of things to learn, like without a strong government and army a civilization is likely to fall. |
