Palliative care
Palliative care is often not a big subject when talking about the future. Although it’s not a new thing, not a lot of people know about it or have heard about it. That is why we want to introduce you to this health care service, and talk about the changes and improvements in the future.
The real definition of palliative care is: any form of medical care or treatment that concentrates on reducing the severity of disease symptoms, rather than striving to halt, delay or reverse progression of the disease itself or provide a cure. It is also called an approach that improves the quality of life of patients and their families facing the problems associated with life-threatening illness The goal is to prevent and relieve suffering and to improve quality of life for people facing serious, complex illness.
Palliative care looks at one patient, everyone is unique and everyone get's special attention and care which fits them best.
It can be the solution to the ethical question raised by euthanasia. People who end their life with euthanasia may change their mind if they can get palliative care. The decision to choose for euthanasia is mainly risen when a patient does not want to live in his/her harmful and painful conditions. When patients are given palliative care from the beginning of their treatments they will probably feel much better, mentally and physically. Palliative care can change and improve the quality of life for patients who are in pain.
Palliative care should become an increasing part of care from diagnosis to death. The focus on a patient's quality of life has increased greatly during the past twenty years. In the United States today, 55% of hospitals with more than 100 beds offer a palliative-care program, and nearly one-fifth of community hospitals have palliative-care programs. Another recent development is the concept of a special palliative-care team. We hope to have more developments, and the numbers will and have to increase.
In the future palliative care has to be included in the contracts for all the hospitals and help-services. More and more governments are making plans for this special care, fortunately. Because palliative care services have a great position in healthcare. Before, we did not really focus on this part, we only focused on curing the patient from the inside. But more people need palliative care than any other health or social care. The quality of life is one of the most important when a patient is ill. We need to have a good end of life care. However, a disadvantage might be that this health care service mostly depends on voluntary jobs. We can change and find a solution for that in the future and help ensure that palliative care becomes a mainstream service for those who need it.
It has to become a big part of the curing treatment, and be as important as the medicines!
