The term temperate refers to any region between the tropics and the arctic circles. These have what is considered a moderate climate, and the forests there are usually what we would consider as "average". This covers such a large region of the world, however, that temperatures can vary hugely. In temperate areas, the seasons are often more pronounced than in tropical or arctic areas.
