The Chakras

According to Dr. Luscher, the ethical norms and the human personality correspond to different colors; but there is another tradition that claims each of our body parts have a color; to whose energy the part responds. Never heard of such a thing? Well, it’s no surprise, considering that the concept is centuries old; and is only resurfacing in the recent years.

The Sanskrit word for wheel is “Chakra.” According to the ancient people of India, Egypt and China; colors could be used to heal both physical and emotional problems. The tradition of “chromotherapy,” thought to originate from the ancient Indian practice of Ayurveda, is based on the belief that the body consists of seven chakras, or wheels. The seven chakras correspond to the energy of the seven colors of the rainbow, and the energy of the chakras enables them to flow evenly; completing the cycle of life. For good health, both emotional and physical, the chakras need to run smoothly to run the inner machinery of the human body.

The seven chakras control the seven parts of the body:
The Crown Chakra: Violet
The Brow Chakra: Indigo
The Throat Chakra: Blue
The Heart Chakra: Green
The Solar Plexus chakra: Yellow
The Sacral Chakra: Orange
The Base Chakra: Red

The concept of color therapy in a nutshell is: color energy affects the body; physically, emotionally and spiritually; so colors may be used to heal the body, soul and mind.

The Crown Chakra and Violet

The Crown Chakra is at the very top of your head. Associated with the color violet, it governs the brain and the pineal endocrine gland. As a result, this chakra’s malfunction leads to many mental disorders and brain-related diseases; while the well-being of the chakra means spiritual health, understanding and knowledge. The problems caused by this chakra include depression, schizophrenia, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, dizziness and epilepsy. Like all things, the chakra’s energy is two-faced, and an imbalance of the violet energy in the crown chakra leads to a feeling of superiority, coldness towards other people, and an emotional withdrawal. Violet’s positive properties, however, include idealism, sacrifice for others, deep love and respect for all living beings and a clarity of thought and perspective.

The Brow Chakra and Indigo

The Brow Chakra acts within your forehead, with influence on the eyes, sinuses and the pituitary gland. Indigo being associated with self-responsibility, self-enhancement and intuitive ability, it is vital for the brow chakra to remain in good health. Some of the problems that may be traced back to this chakra are problems with the eyes (e.g. cataracts, myopia, color blindness), ears, sinuses and tension or stress. When the indigo energy turns malicious, it hinders vision—both intuitive vision and physical vision. It muddles the understanding and the connection between the inner soul and your path in life. But when in complete balance, indigo energy spreads orderliness and clarity; with some of the qualities being loyalty, integrity and intuitive understanding.

The Throat Chakra and Blue

The lungs, throat and the thyroid gland are all functioned by the blue energy of the Throat Chakra. Because it governs the throat, this chakra promotes expression and communication. Blue energy is also known for balance, calmness, logic and trustworthiness. However, an imbalance in the throat chakra can be very harmful, as it can cause breathing problems like bronchitis and asthma, sore throats, ulcers, tonsillitis and thyroid problems like ADHD. Along with other chakras, this one can also instigate anorexia nervosa. When the body lacks indigo energy, we become untrustworthy, cold, unfaithful and overly self-righteous.

The Heart Chakra and Green

The heart, breasts and the thymus gland are the functional organs and glands of the green heart chakra. As you may guess, this chakra is the center of unconditional love. Chromotherapists believe that the wholesome functioning of this chakra not only spreads love throughout the universe, it also enables people to love themselves. Pink and turquoise are two other colors that are associated with this chakra, which can be the target of heart diseases, immunodeficiency diseases and breast cancer. Lack of green harmony can cause jealousy, indifference, dissatisfaction and bitterness, but a balance leads to the reign of compassion, love and generosity.

The Solar Plexus Chakra and Yellow

Located below the ribs, the solar plexus chakra is the monitor of the majority of the digestive system; the stomach, small intestine, spleen, liver and pancreas. Problems in these organs like gall stones, liver disease, diabetes and pancreatitis are rooted in the solar plexus chakra.  Yellow being the color of self-worth, inner personality and ego, its energy defines the way we feel about ourselves, and consequently others’ perception of us. An imbalance of yellow energy can lower self-esteem, increase analytical thinking and lead to cynical or pessimistic thinking. Those blessed with yellow are optimistic, cheerful and confident.

The Sacral Chakra and Orange

This chakra is situated in the lower abdomen and controls a good many organs and glands; the uterus, ovaries, testes, large bowel, prostate gland and the initial stages of embryo development. Orange energy is the essence of self-respect, and it affects our relationship with other people. You can only respect others and their boundaries if you respect yourself and define your own boundaries. Menstrual problems, endometriosis and lower back pain are all indicators of a problem in the sacral chakra. People who do not have sufficient orange energy tend to be unsociable, withdrawn, destructive and despondent. A healthy balance of orange promotes independence, creativity, sociability and joy.

The Base Chakra and Red

At the base of the spine, the Base Chakra controls the legs, kidneys, bladder, vertebral column and adrenal gland. Problems like hypertension, diarrhea, constipation, kidney stones and Crohn’s Disease can arise here. The energy of red is extremely potent, with the main focus being self-awareness. Your sense of security and stability is dependent on red. While red energy gives courage, inner strength, will power and assertion, the lack of the same can lead to insecurity, aggression, self pity and fear
