Stonehenge

Why is Stonehenge one of the world's greatest mystyries? Who built them and why is it there? No one knows or understands about this great mystery. There are only theories and legends to the history behind Stonehenge, but none of them can be proved. Stonehenge is an a circle of stones. These are not just regular stones. Some of these stones can weigh more than 26 tons!It probably took millions of hours in constructing the stone circle. It is located in the Salisbury plains in England. The construction of Stonehenge started around 2950 B.C.E and finished around 1600 B.C.E.

Construction of Stonehenge

There were only two type of stones used for Stonehenge. The two types are the sarsen and bluestones. Sarsen stones is a type of sandstone and is hard. Each sarsen stones be as big as nine to twenty feet long. Bluestones are sedimentary rocks that can sometimes appear blue. Many of these stones were used in the contruction of Stonehenge.

The construction of Stonehenge obviously took much effort. The construction was broken down into three phases. In phase one, the workers digged a ditch in a circle. The diameter of the circle was 320 feet and the ditch was 20 feet wide. Inside of the circle, they made 56 small holes called Aubrey Holes. After that, they placed two stones across from each other in opposites sides called the Slaughter stones. In phase two, workers placed about 80 bluestones in a semicircle inside of the ditch. Then they placed the entrance of the stones to precisely align with the sunrise in the summer. It aligned the Heel stone to the Slaughter stone. The aligned placement was called the Avenue. In phase three, the workers placed more stones around the other circle of stones. The circle of stones on the outside were sarsen stones. Each of those sarsen stones were topped with another stone. Later on, they placed part of the bluestones to form a horseshoe shape and topped those bluestones with stones, too. They then put two circles of holes around the stones and thus finally ending the construction of Stonehenge. Part of the construction of Stonehenge is a mystery because of how the workers transported the stones. In phase two, they placed the bluestones in the Salisbury plains. Bluestones were only found in Presili Mountains, which is 250 miles away. Each bluestone weighs more than 4 tons! How did they carry all of those stones?
