Myths and History

The Mayans were very intelligent and independent. They created sacred books which held important information about their daily lives, mythology, and beliefs. They believed in gods that helped them and god that could harm them. Some of these gods were: Ah Puch the god of death and destruction. He also brought diseases and was somehow connected with war. The rain god was a very important god. they called him Chac. They would feed him many human sacrifices Another god of death, Cizin, was linked to earthquakes. These earthquakes were very devastating. Hun-hunahpu was the god of maize and vegetation. his sons, Hunahpu and Xbalanque tricked the lords of the underworld. Itzamna was the head of all gods he was ruler of all heaven. The goddess of fertility pregnancy, and childbirth was Ixchel. Kinich Ahua was the sun god. Kukuclan was god of learning and crafts. Every god was known for something. Itzamna is said that he gave the world the basic tools of civilization, language and fire. He was the inventor of writing and was somehow linked to healing. His wife, Ixchel, was goddess of fertility. pregnancy, and birth. Ah Puch was shown with decomposing skin and a skull as a head. He ruled the lowest level of the Mayan Underworld. Cizin, another death god, was connected in particular with earthquakes which struck Mesoamerica with such great force. The Maya represented him as a dancing skeleton with dangling eyes. His enemy was the god of maize and vegetation, Ah Mun. He is pictured with an ear of maize growing form his head. The sun god was associated with jaguars, Kinich Ahu. The rain god was a major character throughout all Mesoamerican mythology. He was named Chac by the Maya. He was often represented as a fisherman or as a fishlike reptile creature.
