Xibalba is the Mayans idea of the underworld. It was feared and thought to be an awful place. The word Xibalba means the "place of fright." This underworld was not the place that bad people went to after they died, like the Christians believe with hell and sinners. Anyone who died on earth and did not have a violent death was sent to Xibalba. People who had a violent death were thought to have died with honor or deserved better. These people were sent to heaven. Xibalba had many different levels that varied in amounts of pain and frightfulness. Xibalba could be entered when going through a cave or still water like the cenotes. Xibalba was believed to be west of the Mayan cities. They would burry people who had passed on, west of the city to help the reach Xibalba. Xibalba was feared place that was a major part of the Mayan religion.
