Government

Classes were very important during this time. There were five classes, which was the nobles and business people, bankers and people with a lot of money, low rank business people, the peasants, and last are the slaves. The government was ruled by wealthy people, which means that wealth was very important at that time. The nobility class people got into a conflict with the merchants. These two societies had to compete with the people, the working class. In the 13th century, the revolt of Ciompi happened because the people were protesting against the political and economical laws,which occurred in Florence, this protest in Florence made a difference in the other city-states. The nobility had money to make investments, but they made very bad investments. They would get this money by borrowing and would lone their properties to the people who they borrowed from. Due to the economy and the very wealthy cities, most of the merchants spent money on several things such as painting, learning, investing money on banks, and new businesses .

Cities part of the half of the Italian peninsula were controlled by monarchy, which means that kings and queens ruled and the people who ruled after them is their family like sons or daughters. Also, driven states were being under the power of the Pope, which means the religion at that time was Catholicism. The Popes didn’t have any power in the government and weren’t considered to be upper class anymore, but wanted to gain political power. Also, there was an increment in literacy and education, and an exploration era. Some of the cities were governed by people who were like republicans, regularly governed by the senate, which means that the nobility and the rich merchants had control over people. The Renaissance also had an influence on the general society, most of the people because it involved politics. Also, people got influenced in the outside world of the small town communites. At one time a tyrant in Milan, he came to power and was named as a signor. Florence and Venice continued being republics, only a few rich families can replace as the Medicis in Florence, who controlled everthing. At that time, lots of wars occured and because of these wars, the number of city-states were less to the more powerful are like Florence, Milan, Venice, the Papal states, and the kingdom of Naples.

Leonardo Bruni was important during this time. He thought that the government should be ruled by republicans. Also, he and some other scholars were founders of the republican government. The republicans believed that you should do what’s best for your country and fight for it. Also, he knew a lot about politics and was chancellor in the goverment and he was also a humanist.
