JAWAHARHARLAL NAHRU

Born on 14 November 1889, Jawaharlal was the son of Motilal Nehru. He went to england to studey law, but soon after his return, he met Mahatma Gandhi and joined the National movement. He was very close to Gandhi, and became a major leader of the Congress. During the course of the freedom struggle, his father, mnother and wife had died and he had spent nine years in jail. Jawaharlal remained committed to the dream an vision of building a strong and independent India, Mahatma Gandhi felt he was the best person to lead the new country.

The quit india movement

The congress aimed to start a non-violent mass struggle on 9 august 1942. But on the mornig of 9 august gandhi and other leaders were arrested. Hartals and protests started everywhere. the people started attacking.

The father of Nation

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born in Gujarat Porbandar on 2nd october 1869. He went to England to study law.
Satyagraha
He started a form of resistance. Satyagraha means using truth and nonviolence to fight against injustice.He said that one should openly peacefully and fearlessly resist all wrong.
Gandhi dounded the Sabarmati ashram at Ahmadabad. He travelled around India to get a better understanding of the people and their problems.

The great reformer

Raja Ram Mohan Roy lived in India at the time where the British ruled his country. He was born in a well to do family, and when he was a young man, he went to work for the British at calcutta. He was a scholar who studied philosophy, religion and languages, including Greek, Latin, French, English, Persian, Arabic and Sanskrit.
Raja Ram Mohan Roy particularly believed that everyone had the right t be treated with respect. He wanted to see the caste system reformed to prevent one caste from treating another caste badly. He wanted to stop the practice of Suttee in which a widow was burned alive on her usbands funeral pyre. And he wanted women to have a higher status and greater respect in the community.
