History of Yoga

In the early Vedas(900 BCE AND 500 BCE) it is mentioned that there were many mystical practices of ‘tapasya’ it was mainly breath control and connecting the mind with the God - ‘PARAM BRAHMA’.Popular yoga writer George feverstine writes that yoga was fundamental to the vedic rituals, specially the chanting of the sacred hyms.It is mentioned in the earliest veda "The Rig veda" , the yoga was also mentioned in the Upanishads which were wrote around 900 BC ,in the textual records of the ‘MAHABHARATA’(5th C.BCE),BHAGVAT GITA(200 BCE) and the SUTRAS OF THE PATANJALI(200 -300 BCE).

In the history Patanjali was the first to analyse the yoga in a systematic way.The book ‘THE YOGA SUTRAS OF THE PATANJALI’ helped us today a lot. Most of the basic principals of this book are also used today to follow the yoga and teach yoga to different people.

According to the archeologists George Possehl-several seals and the information was discovered in the field of the yoga.At different sites the seals were found like at HARAPPAN CIVILISATION ,INDUS VALLEY CIVILISATION(C3300-1700 BC) in these sites the different seals depict the figures of the yogis in the yoga posture and also in the meditation postures.

Going through the ancient Indian history we can find that yoga was the part of the Indian culture and rituals from the ancient times.
