England - the land of tea and crumpets, Big Ben and funny accents. Probably one of the most well-known countries in the world. Most of the more colourful and flamboyant clothing from this culture came from the Elizabethan era when Queen Elizabeth I ruled England, which we will be covering.

Clothing

INNER WEAR


Smocking is embroidery. It is worn by women.
Stocking or a hose is a close-fitting elastic garment. It is worn by men and women.
A corset is a garment that is worn to shape the torso. Men and women would wear a corset.
A farthingale is a hoped skirt and is worn by women
A petticoat is an undercoat. Women and men would wear them.
A stomacher is a garment which covers the chest and stomach. A stomach is richly decorated. A stomacher is worn by women. It would support the stomach and chest area.
A kirtle is a loose fitting gown which is worn under the fancier gown. A kirtle is worn by women.
A partlet is a garment which is used for the head and the shoulders. The people who would wear this are women.
A shirt, in these in the time of the Elizabethan era, the men would wear the shirts. The shirts that the men would wear are a long or short sleeved garment covering the upper part of the body.

OUTER WEAR

Gown is a dress or robe. It is richly decorated with embroidery. It would mainly be darker cloth. The women would wear a gown with a kirtle under it.
Doublet is a close fitting outer garment which could be worn with or without sleeves. The men would wear this garment.
Separate Sleeves are attached to the gown or shirt. Men and women would wear this to complete their outfit.
Breeches are knee length trousers; it would start at the waist and continue down to about the knee. The men would wear this along with their shirt and hat.
Hats are a shaped covering the top of the head. It will have been embroidered with designs and would be decorated to match the gown or shirt that the man or women is wearing.
The shoes cover the foot and men or women would wear them.
Cloak is a cape or a coat the men or women would wear on their backs. It would complete the look when a woman is wearing a gown or a shirt.
Ruff is a neck piece with a collar of lace. It would go around their necks. It would loose fit. Men and women would wear them
