The The Striped Tiger (Danaus genutia) or the Common Tiger is one of the common butterflies of India. This butterfly closely resembles the Monarch Butterfly of Amarica.
The wingspan is about 7.5cm to 9.5cm. Both male and female of the butterfly have tawny wings with veins marked with broad black bands. The underside of the wings resembles the upperside but pale in hue.
It has 16 sub-species. Members of this genus are unplesent in taste and are soon released by predators. They exibit fake death and flies away after being released by the predators.
This butterfly is mimicked by Tamil Lacewing, Leopard Lacewing and females of Common Palmfly.
This butterfly lays its egg singly under the leaves of its host plant. Its caterpiller is black with bluish-white and yellow spots and lines.
