The Plain Tiger (Danaus chrysippus) is a common butterfly wide spread across Asia and Africa. It belongs the Danaine sub-family of Nymphalidae.

This is a medium sized butterfly with wing-span of 7-8cm. The body is black with many white spots. The wings are tawny the upper side being brighter and richer than the underside.

The male Plain Tiger is smaller than the female but more brightly coloured.

The Plain Tiger is protected from attacks due to the unpalatable alkaloids ingested during the larval stages. This various other species like the female Danaid Eggfly mimicks this butterfly to avoid predators.
