The Lemon Butterfly (Papilio demoleus) is common swallowtail butterfly without a prominent tail. This butterfly is found at a wide range of places spanning from Middle East to Australia and even at West Indies. This is the most common and widely distributed butterfly among the swallowtails.In india it is found in the plains and sub-Himalayan regions.
This butterfly is a frequent mud-puddler and visitor to flowers. This butterfly is a swift flier and many times hovers a meter above ground level. It is fond of Lantana plant and often seen on Ixora flowers.
The female butterfly travels hurriedly from plant to plant and lays a single at a time on the top of a leaf. The caterpiller resembles bird dropping and thus avoid predated.
Despite of their camouflage, these caterpillers are attacked by wasps that use these caterpilers as host to thier larvae. During pupation dozens of wasp come out killing the insect.
