Rainwater Harvesting

One of our team members Rujuta visited one of India’s largest paint company called “Asian Paints” in Mumbai to learn more about rain water harvesting.  Asian Paints has a department, called total water management where the models of rain harvesting are kept in a separate room.

Rainwater harvesting is the process of collecting and storing rain for future productive use. One easy method is to recharge the rainwater into the ground using small open wells called recharge wells. Any rainwater harvesting system has three components: Catchment, Conveyance, and Storage.

Catchment is an area where rainwater is collected in simple vessels at the edge of the roof.
Conveyance System is a mechanism to transfer the rainwater collected on the rooftops to the storage tanks.
Storage is the method of collecting rainwater harvested using guttering. A recharge well is one of the storage devices. A typical recharge well is one meter in diameter. It is then lined with pre-cast concrete rings with perforations to allow water to slip out from the sides. These rings are then gradually lowered into the well to line it from the bottom all the way to the ground level and above the rooftop rainwater is led into the recharge well through pipes which pass through a small filter.
Some of the benefits of Rain Harvesting include compliance with the law, recharge of the aquifer, prevention of urban flooding, and increase in the groundwater levels.
