The Disadvantages of text messaging
Text messaging is the newly popularized communication
medium that has everyone going crazy for it. The average person
sends about a dozen or more text messages a day. However, constan
t text messaging can have a negative effect on your life. There have
been many negative incidents or effects which have plagued the text
messaging wave of users, from incidents as silly as chain messages
to things as extreme as addiction.
One of the negative incident with text messaging that occurred in the
United Kingdom was when a young girl committed suicide due to text
related bullying. The new text message bullying has seemed to become
a new epidemic that kids in the UK now have to face. It was said that
1 out of every 4 children are bullied through either text messaging
or e-mail. Unfortunately, this seemly childish banter turned in to
a serious problem.
In addition to text bullying, schools have reported that students
that are allowed to bring their phones to schools are often caught
text messaging or using text messaging lingo in their work. Many people
are being distracted in class because they are two busy text messaging
their friends. There are students who are even, according to a high
school teacher, “… addicted to text messaging and they just can’t
live without it”. Others who are not sending texts during class are
writing the lingo in their school work. People are worried that the
increase use of the fad could lead to the disintegrating of the English
language both written and oral.
Text messaging seems to be an easy form of communication but to what
extent do you pay for it? Due to recent text messages being brought
to court during trials many have been wondering if the company that has
access to your text messages may read them. Many are unclear of the policies
that are followed when it comes to text messaging. This is a disadvantage
because this means that your privacy
can be violated due to text messaging without your knowledge.
The final disadvantage of text messaging is the fault in the general
sending process of the service. There are many issues when it comes
to the sending and receiving of text messages. There have been many
complaints in which text were not sent completely or not received
at all. In most cases when the service is being used by a large sum
of people, there is more of a chance that your text messaging will
fail. It has been shown that 91 percent of text messages are sent
within the first five minutes; however, there are 5.1 percent of text
that are not being sent at all. In times of emergencies when everyone
attempts to use there phones at once the amount of text “lost in translation”
takes a large increase.
In conclusion, there are many disadvantages to text messaging. Any
and everyone who uses text messaging can create there own personal
disadvantages. Major disadvantages are people using the service for
cruelty, the services unreliable sending/receiving methods, and the
lack of knowledge people have of their text messaging rights.
