WORLD WATER DAY

International World water day is celebrated on 22 March every year refocus our attention on the importance of water especially fresh water and advocating for the sustainable management of fresh water resources.

In 1992,   The United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNED) recommended an international day to celebrate importance of fresh water .The United Nation General Assembly subsequently designated 22 March as first International world Water day in 1993

Every year, the world water day highlights a specific aspect of fresh water. For the year 2009, the theme of the world water day is “Shared Water – Shared Opportunities”

A special focus is placed on Transboundary Waters. Managing water across borders could promote trust and understanding, leading to a more peaceful and secure world, enabling sustainable economic growth. Leading agencies for World Water Day 2009 are the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE).

These agencies have taken the initiative towards better water management but a lot more needs to be done to create public awareness so that all the efforts taken in this direction bear fruit.
