Prometheus was the son of a Titan and of a nymph. When Zeus decided
to make man and animals, he told Prometheus to give
something to every creature. Prometheus entrusted this mission to his brother Epimetheus, who gave to one animal
sharp teeth, to another claws, to another speed and so
on.
Unfortunately he accidentally shared out all of god’s
gifts and kept nothing for man. Prometheus, to
correct his brother’s mistake stole fire from
Olympus and gave it to men to warm
themselves and to iron weapons and tools.
Then Zeus punished him by chaining him to a
mountain peak, where an eagle came every day
and tore out part of his liver. Thus Prometheus
suffered greatly.
The suffering of Prometheus lasted many thousands of
years. It was Hercules, a Greek hero, who killed the
eagle and delivered the Titan.
