Luge
Olympic sport
Since 1964

Luge means “sled” in French.  The Vikings were believed to create this sport.  The very first international luge race was in 1883 in Davos, Switzerland.  This race included twenty-one competitors from Australia, England, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United States of America.  The first World Championships took place on an artificial track in 1955.
