Ice Hockey
Olympic sport
Since 1920
The word hockey comes from the French word “hocquet” Hocquet means “stick”. Most people believe that the British people brought ice hockey to America but it has never been proved. Soldiers that were stationed in Nova Scotia, Canada played the earliest games of ice hockey. During the year 1879, the first set of rules was created by a group of college students at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. During the 1890s the sport made its way down to the south and was introduced to the United States. The very first known hockey game that was ever played was John Hopkins versus Yale University in 1895.
