Bobsleigh
Olympic sport
since 1924
The sport of bobsleigh didn’t begin until that late 19th century. It was originally a mode of transportation. The world’s first bobsleigh club was founded in St. Moritz, Switzerland. This club made bobsleigh a big sport in the winter resorts throughout
Europe. Bobsleigh races took place on a mixture of ice courses. The very first racing bobsleighs were made of wood. These sleds were soon replaced with steel sleds. As bobsleighing became more popular, more people decided to start to bobsleigh race. Although in 1952, there was a rule that was put into place that a bobsleigh team could only be a certain combined weight.
