The Basilisk

A basilisk is a legendary reptile / bird reputed to be king of serpents and said to have the power of causing death by a single glance.

It was hatched from the egg laid by a cockerel which was incubated by toad.  A basilisk has a snakes body, a cockerels head and stumpy wings.

Not only can it kill with a single stare but it has a foul and poisonous breath.  It can pollute water, turn green fields into barren lands and shatter rocks by brushing against them.

However, weasels are said to be immune to the basilisks poison and they can be killed by their own reflection.

The Roman writer, Pliny, describes the basilisk and recently   J. K. Rowling uses a basilisk creature in her book “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets”.
