Philately is the study and collection of stamps. These includes the design, production and use of stamps. It can be developed into a learning hobby irrespective of whether or not the person is a collector of these items. The word Philatelie comes from the greek words Phil plus ateleia, which meant tax exemption or tax immunity. The stamp exempted, not the sender of the letter, but the recipient of the letter, from paying a mailing fee or tax

The alternative terms "timbrophily" and "timbrology" are far less commonly used
.

Philatelists are stamp collectors. Some collect as an investment. They want stamps to sell and trade, but you can collect stamps simply for the joy of it. Stamps are  either Commemorative (special) issued on special events or Definitive issued for day to day postal needs. Each postage stamp is a carefully designed piece of miniature art which speaks evocatively about the subject depicted on it.

Philatelic items- refers to stamps, brochures, first day covers, miniature sheets, sheet lets, thematic packs, that can be very informative and can be included in the collection.

Philatelic items in India are printed at Indian Security Press located at Nasik. To know more on it click this link-

The basic rule of stamp collecting is to enjoy what you're collecting and take good care of your stamps. Other than that, you can collect whatever stamps you like and display them in whatever way you like.

Stamp Stock books- Stamps are beautiful as well as delicate. A Stamp stock book comes handy to preserve stamps. Also known as an album of stamps. Stamp album is a book with pages on which stamps can be inserted.

Brochure-Whenever any special stamp is issued, a publicity brochure is also brought out. It contains a brief write-up on the subject, designs, name of the designer and also technical data of the stamp.
First Day Covers-These covers are brought out along with a commemorative  or definitive stamp. This is one of the items retained by a philatelist .
Thematic Packs- The Department of Post issues from time to time a set of two or more stamps on particular themes. These are on sale at the Philatelic Bureau/Philatelic Counters. Apart from these there are also collector's pack containing a set of all the special stamps released by the Department of Post that year.

The first scented stamps by the Department of Posts were released in three fragrance- Sandalwood, Rose and Jasmine. (seen in the picture)
