A bank teller is a person who works inside a bank and
usually sits behind a high counter with a window. A bank
teller helps people make
deposits and
withdrawals from their
accounts. He or she also helps people with
safe deposit boxes.
A bank
teller needs to have an education. You need a high school
education and classes after high school to do this job. Good
mathematic skills, reading skills, and computer skills are
important for a bank teller. This job pays $25,000 or less a
year. |

A bank teller needs to count the money in his/her drawer
correctly. For instance, if someone wanted to withdraw money
from a
savings account,
and the teller gives that person 2 dollars more than what he/she
asked for, there will be a problem. At the end of the teller’s
shift, the amount of
money in the teller’s drawer must be balanced. The bank calls
this “proving” the balance. Each teller adds up the amount
deposited into the bank and subtracts the amount that was
withdrawn from the bank by using the deposit and withdrawal
tickets. That amount plus the amount that was in the drawer to
begin the day should equal the amount that is in the
drawer at the end of the day. If it doesn’t match, the
teller has to stay after work until he/she figures out where the
mistake is. Sometimes this can take hours and can cause someone
to be
fired. The teller
we talked to on our
bank trip
thought this was a real pain.
A bank teller needs to be polite. Who wants a bank teller who is
saying rude things and mean stuff? Talking skills are something
a bank teller should also have. If you don’t explain something
clearly the person might make mistakes that will cost them
money! Talking skills and politeness are a must have for bank
tellers.
Bank tellers are very important to a bank!
